Captain America (1990): A Marvel Misadventure!

Hold onto your popcorn, because “Captain America” (1990) is here to take you on a time-traveling, shield-slinging adventure. This is more 90s than a neon fanny pack at a boy band concert!

Before Chris Evans donned the iconic shield, Matt Salinger strapped on the spandex in a Captain America flick. It reeks of 90s, it practically moonwalks across the screen. This Cap is a blast from the past, complete with hair and a costume that screams “Saved by the Bell.”

Directed by Albert Pyun, this gem from the last millennium is a delightful romp through a bygone era of superhero cinema. The special effects may not be as snazzy as today’s CGI, but they’ve got more heart than a mixtape of 90s power ballads.

The supporting cast is as charming as a Tamagotchi. Some characters’ll have you laughing, cheering, and wondering if everyone was contractually obligated to wear shoulder pads. And let’s not forget the villain! Ronny Cox brings a level of 90s villainy that’s so over-the-top, you’ll wonder if he’s auditioning for a wrestling match.

The plot may be as straightforward as a game of Pogs, but it’s got all the classic elements. Everything you need to make superhero movie a hit. There’s action, intrigue, and a healthy dose of cheese that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear.

Now, I won’t lie, this may not be the Cap you’re used to seeing on the big screen today. But that’s what makes it special! It’s a time capsule of a different era. This one is a reminder of a time when superhero movies were as colorful and zany as a Lisa Frank folder.

So, grab your slap bracelets and your Walkman, because “Captain America” (1990) is a blast from the past. Indeed, you’ll have you feeling like a kid again. It’s a hilarious, heartwarming ride that proves even the cheesiest superhero can save the day!

So Bad It’s Good!!!

The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010)

A prequel to Ip Man and Ip Man 2!

Ip is taught Wing Chun by a couple of masters and travels to Hong Kong to further his skills.
There has been a heap of movies about legendary Kung Fu master Ip Man in recent years, and each does portray a slightly different character.

With that said, then this 2010 version portrays the early years of Ip Man. And while being a newcomer to a lead role, then Yu-Huang To did manage to put on a persuasive and good performance of a young Ip Man. And his performance was good in martial arts and acting alike.

Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis (1961): Herc-tastic Hilarity from the Golden Age!

Hold onto your laurel wreaths because “Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis” (1961) is here to flex its way into your heart!

This golden oldie directed by Vittorio Cottafavi is a sword-and-sandal spectacle that’s cheesier than a wheel of feta.

Alan Steel dons the lion’s pelt as Hercules, and boy, does he bring the brawn! His muscles have more screen time than the Colosseum, and his heroic exploits are as over-the-top as a chariot race in zero gravity.

Cottafavi’s direction is a wild chariot ride through ancient Greece and beyond. The sets are more colorful than a peacock parade, and the costumes are so epic, they make togas look like yesterday’s news.

The special effects are a delightful blast from the past. Ray Harryhausen may not be involved, but the stop-motion monsters have a charm all their own. They’re like claymation critters with a PhD in menacing.

The supporting cast hams it up with gusto, delivering lines with the gravitas of Shakespearean thespians. The villains, in particular, are as devious as a Cyclops with an evil plan, and they’ll have you cheering for Herc to knock some sense into them.

The plot? It’s a whirlwind tour of Greek mythology with a side of Atlantis. It’s more twisty than a labyrinth and has more turns than Odysseus’ voyage home. But fear not, it’s all in good fun, and you’ll be rooting for Herc every step of the way.

Now, I’ll admit, “Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis” may not be high art, but it’s a Herculean dose of entertainment that’ll leave you grinning like Dionysus at a wine tasting.

So grab your laurel wreath, dust off your sandals, and prepare for a mythological romp that’s as lovably ludicrous as a minotaur in a tutu. This is a blast from the past that’s more fun than a Bacchanalian feast. Don’t miss it!

Written and Directed by: Vittorio Cottafavi
Starring: Reg Park, Fay Spain, Ettore Manni

King Solomon’s Mines (2004)

Enjoyable and well done adventure film!

King’s Solomon’s Mines brings us Patrick Swayze (playing Allan Quatermain)who has spent a lot of time in Africa, but decides it is time to return to England and be a father to his son. He finds that his wife’s parents have taken custody of his son and that he has very little chance of getting custody of him with lots of money for a law suit. In comes Alison Deedy (playing Elizabeth) whose father is in Africa and being held by an African tribe for ransom of the map Elizabeth’s father had sent her. Elizabeth seeks out Quatermain to take her back to Africa to find her father.

The problem with the 1985 version of this movie is simple; Indiana Jones was so closely modeled after Alan Quartermain. With this new M4TV mini-series, you get much more story, character development of your lead, solid portrayals, and a fine, even, entertaining blend.

Starring: Patrick Swayze, Alison Doody and Roy Marsden

TIE Fighter (2015)

Most epic fan film ever created, pure awesomeness!

A short Star Wars animation, focused on the Empire, drawn and shaded in the style of classic ’80s anime. Empire and rebel forces engage in a frantic all-or-nothing dogfight in space, but the Empire has 3 Tie Fighter aces up its sleeve.

Combining incredible animation and a score that will get your blood pumping, this 7-minute video will make you want to sign up for the Imperial Navy.

Heavily inspired by the TIE Fighter video game (probably still the best space flight-sim to this day), no shortcuts are taken on the animation when to comes to rapidly changing camera angles and sleek design. In ways it reminds of the “Call of the Primitives” episode of the original Transformers, but it also has a strong hint of anime (more Akira than Ghost in the Shell).
