I’m very nervous and excited to be releasing my very first self-written and directed short film! Since you all loved my “break up with your boyfriend, i’m bored” video, I decided I’d do a sequel with the same actors and storyline, but in the form of a film instead! This follows the lives of the two girls in my music video, 2 years down the road, after Heidi (Jessica Danecker) finally breaks up with her boyfriend, Travis (Matias Lucas). She finally revisits her best friend, Maia (played by me) after 2 years of not speaking. This is how their story continues…

Starring:
Maia – Keara Graves
Heidi – Jessica Danecker

Dante’s Inferno (1911)

A striking piece of history, this 1911 adaptation of Dante’s The Divine Comedy was the first full length feature made in Italy!

Newly restored from a variety of sources, it’s still an amazing visual experience as the poet Virgil leads Dante on a journey through Purgatory and Hell. Taking visual inspiration from Gustav Doré’s iconic illustrations, Giuseppe de Liguoro worked for more than three years with 150 people and what was then the biggest film budget ever to complete his masterpiece.

Considering it was made in 1911 for approximately $2 million and had to be rebuilt almost a century later, it’s a fantastic exercise in early cinema. The footage is spectacular, and the primitive special effects still evoke the same shock and emotion they must have upon its premiere.

>L’Inferno’s pantheon of demons and sinners are imaginatively conjured up on ambitious sets using a variety of then-pioneering cinematic tricks such as forced perspective to allow a gigantic Pluto to rage at the dwarfed interlopers, overlays for when they arrive at the city of Dis and see furies scaling the battlements and an ingenious combination of miniatures and live action to create remarkable encounters with three chained giants and a final confrontation with Lucifer himself.

Sam Warner’s idea was to take the film on the road, together with a narrator, who, while the movie unspooled, would read extracts from the original poem. The idea worked. The film opened in Hartford, Connecticut, and, according to Jack Warner, you could hear the cash registers ringing all the way to Ohio. The tour netted them $1,500 which Sam and Jack blew on a crap game in New York.

Sword of Lancelot (1963)

Sword of Lancelot (1963) – King Arthur’s most valued Knight of the Round Table

Sword of Lancelot (1963) is a lesser-known version of the Camelot legend. It is a work almost solely made by Cornel Wilde, who co-produced, directed, co-wrote, and played Lancelot. Lancelot is King Arthur’s most valued Knight of the Round Table and a paragon of courage and virtue. Things change, however, when he falls for Guinevere (Wallace), bride of Arthur (Brian Aherne, who had essayed this character previously in 1954’s Prince Valiant), and she for him.

Cast and Crew:

Directed by Jacques Tourneur and Mario Bava, produced by Bruno Vailati, written by Alberto Barsanti (story), Ennio De Concini (writer), Augusto Frassinetti (writer), Raffaello Pacini (story) and Bruno Vailati (writer), starring Steve Reeves as Phillipides (Phidippides), Mylène Demongeot as Andromeda (Creuso’s daughter), Sergio Fantoni as Theocritus, Daniela Rocca as Charis, Philippe Hersent as Callimachus, Alberto Lupo as Miltiades, Daniele Vargas as Darius I (King of Persia), Miranda Campa as Andromeda’s handmaid, Gianni Loti as Teucro, Anita Todesco as Andromeda’s friend, Ivo Garrani as Creuso, Sergio Ciani as Euros, Franco Fantasia, Carlo Lombardi, Ignazio Balsamo, Gian Paolo Rosmino and Walter Grant.

Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1954)

Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1954) adapted by a visionary director Luis Bunuel

Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1954) – On 30 September 1659, the aristocratic British Robinson Crusoe’s ship sinks and he miraculously survives on a deserted island somewhere in South America. He retrieves a dog, Rex, and cat, Sam, from the shipwreck together with some supplies, weapons, clothes and tools and builds a shelter. He soon learns how to survive by cooking, farming, harvesting the crops. Then the loneliness begins to haunt him, especially after the loss of Rex. When he sees a group of cannibals in the island, tension and fear become part of his life. Later he saves the life of a savage that was going to be eaten by the cannibals; he names him Friday and they become friends. When Robinson Crusoe sees Caucasians on the island, he finds that Captain Oberzo was the victim of a mutiny and he helps him to retrieve his ship. The classic novel by Daniel Defoe gets adapted by the great Luis Buñuel.

One of Bunuel’s finest films

Of the many great films Luis Bunuel was involved with, ROBINSON CRUSOE is perhaps his most neglected, but in my view, it is one of his very best movies. Defoe’s story of an emissary of white, Christian civilisation suddenly alone in the universe and having to fend for himself, is a wonderful metaphor from which to explore the human condition and spirit, thrust into a world in which, if there is a God, he is seemingly powerless to help or intervene.

Cast and Crew:

Director: Luis Buñuel
Writers: Daniel Defoe (novel)
Stars: Dan O’Herlihy, Jaime Fernández, Felipe de Alba

The Count of Monte Cristo (1975)

Plot:

The Count of Monte Cristo is a TV adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel. Edmond Dantes is falsely accused by those jealous of his good fortune, and is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the notorious island prison, Chateau d’If. While imprisoned, he meets the Abbe Faria, a fellow prisoner whom everyone believes to be mad. The Abbe tells Edmond of a fantastic treasure hidden away on a tiny island, that only he knows the location of. After many years in prison, the old Abbe dies, and Edmond escapes disguised as the dead body. Now free, Edmond must find the treasure the Abbe told him of, so he can use the new-found wealth to exact revenge on those who have wronged him.

The Count of Monte Cristo (1975) Review:

This is a made-for-television version of “Le Comte de Monte Cristo” which I believe qualifies as a masterwork. The feature was directed by David Greene and written by Sidney Carroll. Its basis is the famous adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, the father. The feel of the piece is clean, to my eyes, the lighting very bright, the colors intense. I found it to be modern without committing in any sense a violation of its own century. Even those unable to understand something being of another age but not ‘dated’ can probably still enjoy what I regard as a very superior production of this classic story. The cinematography by Aldo Tinti I find to be memorable, as is the lyrical score by Allyn Ferguson

Day of the Falcon (2011)

Storyline:

Day of the Falcon is set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centers on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. “Black Gold” is another wonderful epic adventure by the French director Jean-Jacques Annaud with a great international cast and wonderful cinematography in an environment of “Lawrence of Arabia”. It is the highest budget Arabian related film since LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and was one of the most anticipated film events in the international film community this season, despite the hype, however, the film was met with mixed reviews after the press screening and premier.

Day of the Falcon (2011) Review:

The highlight of the film was a fantastic performance by lead role Tahar Rahim (A PROPHET, 2009), his soulful eyes and magnetic vulnerability can work in any film whether speaking or just looking into the camera sans dialogue. Mark Strong also plays a great bearded royal Arabian Sultan Amar, even though he speaks with a distinguishable British accent. The roles that threw the film off were those of Antonio Banderas and Freida Pinto.

It is almost impossible to watch Banderas play Bedouin Sheik Nassib without constantly being reminded that he is, in fact, Antonio Banderas. Freida Pinto lends the film her stunning Indian looks as Princess Leyla, but unfortunately her dialogue consists of cliché one-liners that might have saved the movie if not uttered; of course bad film writing is bad writing however delivered.

Day of the Falcon (2011) Trivia:

Expectations were high and while many were left dissatisfied, others rated it a smashing success as it apparently followed the book to a tee, I have not read the book so perhaps I am missing something, but being that I have seen a number of impressive films of late that were made for under the $1 million mark, BLACK GOLD felt like a significant letdown with its $55 million production price-tag and lackluster deliverance.

Hercules Unchained (1959)

Plot:

Hercules Unchained follows Sword and sandals hero who is asked to intervene in a quarrel between two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, over who should rule Thebes. Before he can complete this task, Hercules drinks from a magic spring and is hypnotized by a harem girl who dances the “Dance of Shiva”, loses his memory and becomes the captive of Queen Omphale of Lydia. The Queen keeps men until she tires of them, then has them made into statues. While young Ulysses tries to help him regain his memory, Hercules’ wife, Iole, finds herself in danger from Eteocles, current ruler of Thebes, who plans on throwing her to the wild beasts in his entertainment arena. Hercules slays three tigers in succession and rescues his wife, then assists the Theban army in repelling mercenary attackers hired by Polynices. The two brothers ultimately fight one another for the throne and end up killing each other; the good high priest Creon is elected by acclaim.

Hercules Unchained (1959) Review:

This is the second Hercules flick featuring Steve Reeves as the man of muscle. The legendary Reeves melds with the god/man Hercules and turns what could have been a cheesefest into an action/adventure spectacle as tightly woven as Hercules’ toga. Competing with Reeves for biggest chest is his umptuous co-star Sylvia Lopez as the evil Queen Omphale who makes living statues out of her conquests. Hercules’ pals include Gabriele Antonini as Ulysses who gives the man of muscle a mighty rubdown and competes for Herc’s attentions with his sexy wife Iole, played with sweet sassiness by beautiful Sylvia Koscina. With Hercules shirtless (and occasionally oiled) for most of the flick and his mini-toga riding up his thick manly thighs there’s something for everybody to enjoy. Of special note is the dance of Queen Omphale’s slave girls and Herc’s wrestling match with real life Italian pro-wrestler, Primo Carnera. Keep an eye out for plentiful low camera angles.

Directed by Pietro Francisci
Starring Steve Reeves, Sylva Koscina, Sylvia Lopez

Hercules (1958)

Hercules (1958) – Classic Sword And Sandals Movie

Hercules (1958) – In this melange of characters and events from separate mythological stories, Hercules, demigod and superman, arrives in the ancient Greek kingdom of Iolcus to tutor Iphitus, son of king Pelias; immediately on arrival, he falls in love with the king’s delectable, briefly clad daughter Iole. Before he can win her, he must succeed in a series of quests, in the course of which he teams up with Jason, true heir of Iolcus, whom he accompanies on the famous voyage of the Argonauts.

I saw this film in Brazil when I was 10 and I never could forget it. It is amazing even today. Well produced and directed, it is may be the best of all the Sword and Sandal genre. Steve Reeves was not the awful creature the critics said. And Gianna Maria Canale, the queen of the amazons, deserves the title she once had as the most beautiful woman in the world.Joao Carlos Rodrigues

High Risk (1981)

Plot:

Four American friends, badly needing money, decide to make a commando-like raid into a South American country and steal $5 million from the hacienda of an American-born drug dealer who lives there. The four Americans then succeed rather easily in stealing the money, but soon run into trouble trying to get back out of the country, as both the drug dealer and a small army of bandits each hunt them down trying to get the money.

Watch High Risk (1981) because…

This movie has everything! Shootouts, planes, bandits, drug dealers, great locations, and most of all, a really good bunch of actors at the top of their game. There’s enough action for two Rambo movies, as lots of lighthearted comedy. This is a good action movie that was overlooked because Raiders of the Lost Ark came out at the same time. Recommended to anyone looking for a genuine diamond-in-the-rough eighties film!

Starring: James Brolin, Anthony Quinn, Lindsay Wagner

Jungle Book (1942)

Jungle Book (1942) – Becoming Human with Jungle Ideas

Jungle Book (1942) tells a story of a teenager Mowgli, who was raised by wolves, appears in a village in India and is adopted by Messua. Mowgli learns human language and some human ways quickly, though keeping jungle ideas. Influential Merchant Buldeo is bigoted against ‘beasts’ including Mowgli; not so Buldeo’s pretty daughter, whom Mowgli takes on a jungle tour where they find a treasure, setting the evil of human greed in motion.

Alltime Classic Film based upon brilliant book

Sir Alexander Korda’s splendid film uses Kipling’s book as a launching pad to tell Mowgli’s story after he left his animal friends. It is told with great verve and excitement and its evocative views of the great jungle and the Lost City, as locations for Mowgli’s further adventures, revealed in vibrant Technicolor, are an indication of the excellent production values lavished to make the story come alive. Indian actor Sabu couldn’t be more perfect as Mowgli.

Directed by Zoltan Korda
Starring: Sabu, Joseph Calleia, John Qualen, Frank Puglia

Gulliver’s Travels (1939)

Gulliver’s Travels (1939) – Sailor washes ashore on Lilliput and attempts to prevent war!

Gulliver’s Travels (1939) – Gulliver washes ashore on Lilliput and attempts to prevent war between that tiny kingdom and its equally-miniscule rival, Blefiscu, as well as smooth the way for the romance between the Princess and Prince of the opposing lands. In this he is alternately aided and hampered by the Lilliputian town crier and general fussbudget, Gabby. A life-threatening situation develops when the bumbling trio of Blefiscu spies, Sneak, Snoop, and Snitch, manage to steal Gulliver’s pistol. This animated classic is based on the classic novel by Jonathan Swift (with a little nod to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet).

Why You Should Watch Gulliver’s Travels Online?

Watch Gulliver’s Travels because the story behind this now-classic film is itself an amazing story. It’s the tale of a truly remarkable journey: one that spanned more than 1,200 miles, involved the work of 678 artists who created 665,280 drawings using 16 tons of paper, 49,000 pencils and 12 tons of paint on a half million cells; and all while struggling to meet a seemingly impossible deadline. In December 1939, Gulliver’s Travels opened to great fanfare in theaters in Miami and New York. The crowd in Miami was so large that it filled both the Sheridan and Colony Theaters, while in New York, Gulliver’s Travels broke box office records in its first two weeks at the 3,664-seat Paramount Theater.fleischerstudios

The Lost World (1925)

Living dinosaurs exist in the far reaches of the Amazon!

The Lost World (1925) is the first film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novel about a land where prehistoric creatures still roam. Explorer Professor Challenger is taking quite a beating in the London press thanks to his claim that living dinosaurs exist in the far reaches of the Amazon. Newspaper reporter Edward Malone learns that this claim originates from a diary given to him by fellow explorer Maple White’s daughter, Paula. Malone’s paper funds an expedition to rescue Maple White, who has been marooned at the top of a high plateau. Joined by renowned hunter John Roxton, and others, the group goes to South America, where they do indeed find a plateau inhabited by pre-historic creatures, one of which they even manage to bring back to London with them.

The first full-length Imperialist Adventure film was 1925’s The Lost World, which established many of the tropes of the cinematic version of the genre. In this adaptation of Conan Doyle’s novel, the Great White Hunters are joined by the romantic interest of a fashionable young lady in search of her father, a previous explorer of the land, and scale a plateau populated with dinosaurs and a rampageous volcano that saves its pyroclastic fury until the expedition arrives. Many more films followed in the tradition of The Lost World during that golden heyday of Hollywood in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. Among the most beloved films of the first one hundred years of motion pictures is King Kong (1933). Among the many people who worked on that film, the one person most responsible for its enduring success was master animator Willis O’Brien. The Lost World (1925) represented O’Brien’s artistic coming of age as a stop-motion animator.

Directed by Harry O. Hoyt
Starring: Wallace Beery, Bessie Love, Lloyd Hughes, Lewis Stone.
