Review:

The second Appleseed (2004) started I knew we were witnessing something special. The animation is outstanding. This film has the production values and attention to detail present in films like The Matrix. My jaw hit the floor just as hard with Appleseed as it did with Trinity’s opening fight scene in the first Matrix. The soundtrack offers contributions from Basement Jaxx, Paul Okenfold and the awesome Boom Boom Satellites. Often, when you build yourself up too much to see a movie, the reality can do nothing but disappoint. The opposite was true with Appleseed. I went in expecting 10/10… I got 11. This movie has raised the bar for animation and set a bold new standard. Other animations will be judged and compared with it. Truly a masterpiece, the highest complements are deserved by everyone involved in this production.

Umbrella is a work of love, discipline, and resilience. It’s proof that when we find unique stories within our own experiences and we believe in our dreams with all our hearts, one day they will come true.

The widely acclaimed short has had a successful festival run. It has made history in Brazil by participating in 19 Oscar-qualifying film festivals, including the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. Umbrella is the only Brazilian animated short that qualified for the Oscars this year. If nominated, it would be the first Brazilian animated short ever to get that far in the category.

In making this short, our dream and goal were to translate a painful memory into art to spread a beautiful message of empathy and hope. A sad event inspired us to create a beautiful and delicate story. We couldn’t stop thinking about how precious our memories are, and we must put ourselves in the other’s shoes before jumping to conclusions.

Spot-on story of autism

Speaking as a parent to two autistic children, this film has been excellently made. I don’t think everyone will ‘get it’ but certainly every parent who has a child with additional needs will. This is such a well put together film, (short film too at less than 6 minutes) that tells one of the most poignant, moving and spot-on stories of autism that I’ve ever seen.
