The Aftermath (1982) – The world destroyed by nuclear war

What comes after World War III?

1h 35min | Sci-Fi, Thriller | 1982 (USA)

Two astronauts return to Earth to find that it has been destroyed by nuclear war. L.A. has been taken over by Cutter and his gang of outlaw bikers. Cutter rapes and pillages. There are also mutants. The astronauts hook-up with the only normal people left: two women, a boy and a girl!

This movie wasn’t that bad. When I was a little kid I rented it and it always seemed eerie to me. If your bored one day just rent it, who cares if its totaly low-budget. It’s fun to watch because I wish I could make a movie that like someday.

Mix of “The Planet of the Apes”, “The Omega Man”, “The Last Man on Earth” and “The Stand”

This movie is pretty entertaining really. It borrows from The Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man or The Last Man on Earth, and The Stand among others (although every movie borrows from something). Yet the movie still has a style all its own and while it is mostly a very funny movie that was supposed to be serious, it does offer a bit of creativity. Has several scenes that most directors would not have included, that’s not a bad thing. A good movie for the fatalist. Worth watching for everyone else. Except kids I guess, there are some scenes of gore. (head explodes, a knife through the head via the eye, lots of bullets flying, dead bloody kid, mutants, and decayed bodies).

Fun Fact: The beach scene was shot on the same location as Planet of the Apes (1968). At around 13 minutes, Steve Barkett can be seen climbing over the rock where the Statue of Liberty is located in the earlier film.

Starring: Lynne Margulies, Steve Barkett, Sid Haig

Ode to fantasy and sci-fi – “Avarya” (2019)

Inspired by Asimov’s book “I, Robot, where the titan of sci-fi laid out his famous 3 laws of robotics!

Embarked on a spaceship in the hope of finding a new habitable planet, the human trapped in his own ship after the robot overseer finds every single candidate planet unsuitable.

A splendid short film. I take a bow for the craft. It’s full of the references, from The Little Prince to classic Science Fiction.

Robots, Little Prince and hommage to classic sci-fi

This was brilliant, I’m an avid reader of science fiction & you have me trying to explain the ending to my girlfriend. Is his journey/wish to be this loop forever and the robot makes it so? I’d love to hear someone else’s take. But again..Bravo. This is an example of how gifted we can become, you all should be both proud and humbled,, an achievement here, no lie.

Nostalgia about the better times – “Troll Bridge” (2019)

A love-letter to Terry Pratchett and Discworld

Cohen the Barbarian was angry. Angry that he never died in battle, angry that the world had forgotten him, and angry that his knees were starting to play up in the cold. He was also angry that his faithful mount had been gifted the ability of magical speech. The horse was insisting that they had made a wrong turn back at Slice. He was also angry that the horse was probably right. This was not how it was supposed to end for the barbarian. This was not how the Discworld’s greatest hero imagined it at all.

The nostalgia is emanating through the screen. The nostalgia about the better times. Times when trolls were scary, heroes were epic and Sir Terry Pratchett was alive and writing a book every year or two.

A fantasy world with a comedic tone

When people say that disc world books are comedy fantasy books, it shows that they’ve only ever read the colour of magic. The disc world books are genera fiction, set in a fantasy world with a comedic tone (as no one in their right mind would describe nightwatch as a comedy), but the one theme which ties all the books (even the colour of magic) is “these changing times”, and it’s a theme I love so much. The original short story was great, a troll and a barbarian talking about how much things have changed, and lamenting the loss of the old days. Thus film was spot on, and it got me in the emotions. I think Terry would have loved this, and maybe would have asked why he didn’t get a casting call to play Cohen 😛 brilliant work and I’m glad you shared it.

Starring Don Bridges, Ruben Francis, John Jenkins, Troy Larkin.

A team of elite female commandos – “Mercenaries” (2014)

Expendables with chicks!

The President’s daughter is captured and imprisoned while touring a war zone, so a team of elite female commandos is assembled to infiltrate a women’s prison for a daring rescue.

Mediocre and cheesy, but somehow enjoyable and fun! Best Asylum movie!

This movie is call Mercenaries, but the version i have is really call Expendabelles 3.0. Basically this continue the tradition of THE ASYLUM of copying stuff if i can say, even tough the real Expendabelles is not even out (or will it ever be?) But truth is, this was actually pretty fun. Sure the scenario is really over the top cartoonish, and in no way believable, but i actually enjoyed the action, following those girls around and so on. Got to see it as somewhat of a comic book movie or something.

Directed by Christopher Ray.
Starring Zoë Bell, Cynthia Rothrock, Kristanna Loken, Vivica A. Fox, Brigitte Nielsen.

A Decent Little Indie Sci-Fi – “Dune Drifter” (2020)

No Sand Worms and Spice but still Bonafide science fiction action movie!

Despite Dune in the name, there are no Sand worms, No mighty Houses, no Bene Gesserit, and no Muad’ Dib, and No, the spice does not flow. This is a raw movie. A simply made movie. Too realistic for most people. A movie for hardcore sci-fi fans who will stick it out through all the unpleasant screaming in the beginning, the somewhat bland darkness of space, and the simplistic props and wardrobe.

A movie for hardcore sci-fi fans

Marc Price has been able to create that balance of low budget sci-fi aesthetic from B movies that most of us feel nostalgic for with High Brow commentary and character exploration that not even some of the bigger budget films can provide.

This movie is a decent little indie Sci Fi. The first half hour is a bit weak, especially the overly-slow deaths and the admiral’s aide character, but once they land on the planet it tightens up and becomes a great little suspenseful action movie. The acton was pretty good, especially the lead’s use of weapons.

The locations are stunning, the space battles are suitably epic, and the score fits beautifully.

Directed by Marc Price.
Starring Phoebe Sparrow, Daisy Aitkens, Simon Dwyer- Thomas, Alastair Kirton.

Jin Guards versus The Thieves – “The Final Blade” (2018)

This is just an awesome movie, no wonder 10 international awards haven been won!

The Chicken cup is a treasure that passed by the Emperor of Ming, Jin guards are the imperial guards of Ming Dynasty who got the mission to protect the Chicken Cup. And after hundreds of Years, the Chicken Cup still exist also the only survived Jin guard He Xingyun. The treasure hunters willing to kill him and get the Chicken Cup, He Xingyun then passes on his mission to the young boy Li Moxun, the battle went on again.

I can’t imagine and totally beyond comprehension, this messy film with a totally messed up Chinese history, absolutely ridiculous random jump-around mixed eras with extremely mixed costumes and settings…. and so on would have won some awards of some film festivals. All I can guess is these festivals, their judges and their attending audiences were just assembled by a bunch of brain-dead people who didn’t know what was what, what should be and….to sum up: What’s going on? They didn’t even question themselves when they sat in front of the big screen to watch it: WTF!? Because this is exactly what I concluded after I’ve only watched about 4 minutes. This movie is like the American Chinese food, Chop-Suey, mixed all the leftovers of yesterday, the days before yesterday, maybe even over a week’s foods in the refrigerator, threw them altogether into the wok, thus created a so-called messy Chinese dish: Chop means “randomly mixed”, Suey means “leftover tidbits”; this God-awful movie is exactly what I’m trying to tell you, A randomly mixed leftover tidbits. I’m even more surprised that only one reviewer has warned that this movie was complete garbage. Maybe he and me have both watched a different movie? But I doubt it.

Blade Runner’s Younger Brother – “Slice of Life” (2019)

Amazing homage to the 80s Science Fiction Films!

Story about a low-life drug dealer who tries to turn his life around, but finds himself at the mercy of fate when he encounters a cop with an agenda of his own.

Such a cool SF short! It’s an homage to the science fiction movies of the 80’s, so if you’re a fan, this will be a dream come true, and if you don’t care for the genre, you’ll be astonished by the sheer brilliance of the filmmaking in this movie.

Ridley Scott have created many fans and cyberpunk nerds but not many made amazing films

The esthetic is amazing, all done with practical effects and miniatures… storytelling is Hitchcockian – show, don’t tell. It hits all the right notes for suspense and puts you in the middle of dystopian vortex of despair. This movie left me wanting more, sure hope I get it

Pregnant Woman vs Vicious Life Form – “5th Passenger” (2017)

Fun independent effort on a small budget!

Plot: In the aftermath of an oppressive class war, a pregnant officer aboard an escape pod must struggle to survive with her remaining crew when a mysterious and vicious life form attacks, determined to become the dominant species.

This movie casts several members of the Star Trek family. Manu Intyrami (Icheb, Star Trek Voyager), Tim Russ (Tuvok, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine), Arman Schimerman (Quark, Deep Space Nine), Martina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi, Start Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Enterprise, First Contact, Star Trek Generations and 4 other Star Trek movies), Hana Hatae (Deep Space Nine, Star Trek The Next Generation, the daughter of transporter Chief Miles O’Brien) and Doug Jones from the upcoming series Star Trek Discovery.

Star Trek meets Aliens

The combination of these actors as well as the other main character actors blends together very well. Although the plot does follow the same premise as the “Aliens” movies, these actors do bring their own distinct version of their characters to this movie. The CGI effects are very good and are convincing to the viewer. Some of the plot lines do tend to become slow at times, but the action scenes are very realistic. Being a Star Trek fan from the very beginning, I was impressed to see all the incredible talent these actors brought to this movie. To see these Star Trek actors in different roles was a nice change and they played their roles extremely well. I would add this movie to my Sci Fi collection.

Directed by: Scotty Baker
Starring: Morgan Lariah, Manu Intiraymi, Doug Jones

Buddhist monk on an Epic Journey to India -“Xuan Zang” (2016)

Spiritual Indo-Chinese Masterpiece produced by Wong Kar Wai!

Xuan Zang was a Chinese Buddhist monk who was born during the Tang dynasty, and eventually travelled to India over deserts and mountains. The story depicts the 17 years long legendary seventh century spiritual journey of Buddhist monk Xuan Zang (Hsüan-tsang), who dissatisfied with the translations of Buddhist texts available in China and wanted to collect originals from Nalanda, from China to India during the Tang dynasty and whose famous journey served as an inspiration for Chinese fantasy classic “Journey to The West”.

Eyes are not enough to see the splendor of this masterpiece. Those picturesque and unseen Chinese landscapes are breath-taking. This lavish and high budget spiritual adventure epic is memorable and rare kind. A film must not miss.
Imagery, music, and quest are all seamlessly synthesised to produce an immersive experience.

Chinese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film (at the 89th Academy Awards)

This is a stunning movie that provides a much needed historical and cultural bridge between China and India via Buddhism. A lovely synopsis of Xuanzang’s quest for Mahayana Buddhist scriptures and its source (or as close to it as he could get). It is entertaining as a movie and we can all identify with the pursuit of an arduous quest. They have done a comendable job with a convincing script, acting, and gorgeous and sometimes authentic scenery from both a Chinese and Indian perspective.

Executive producer Wong Kar Wai

But as they begin to search for survivors they discover a mysterious new force that is now firmly in control. Bounty Killer (2013)

Any fans of exploitation films will love this film!

To me the best part of this film is the story: bounty killers hunting the white collars bastards that (still as we speak) ruled this world. It is such a liberation of the mind to see evil people getting eliminated by the dozens, too bad there was not enough of them to my taste but still it was bliss! Awesome movie. B-Rated Cult movie in it’s finest. This is probably an unintentional stroke of genius. No matter what it is “Bounty Killer” has it. So much, in fact I had to write my first movie review. I did it based on the fact that I think everyone should try this movie out just once.

Apocolyptic Action in it’s Purest Form!! Cult Classic!!

>Its post-apocalyptic, Its based on a graphic novel, the main character is called “Drifter,” Barak Hardley declares PBR Tastes like boobies. Overall I have to side with San Francisco Chronicle reviewer G. Allen Johnson’s assessment that everyone in the film looks to be having a good time.

This is a movie to see if you like action, comedy and violence this is for you, it will totally entertain you. If you are on the soft side, avoid this movie, it is not for you at all, stick to the smurfs!
