Nanook of the North

Our Take

Nanook of the North (1922) - Robert Flaherty might have staged half the 'reality' he caught on film, but the struggle for survival in this frozen hellscape is as real as it gets. This is man against the absolute, bone-chilling nothingness of the Arctic. It’s a primal, visceral documentary born of sweat and whale fat, documenting a world vanishing into the white mist. Staged or not, the cold in this film is real, and the desperation is palpable. It’s a stark, beautiful testament to the human animal’s refusal to just roll over and die in the snow.
