The Last Command (1928) - Emil Jannings is a titan falling into the abyss. He plays a former Russian General turned into a shivering Hollywood extra, forced to relive his own tragic downfall on a movie set for a few bucks and a meal. It’s a meta-cinematic tragedy of the highest order, a gut-wrenching look at how the gears of history grind individuals into dust. The ending is a haunting explosion of madness and lost dignity that will stick to your ribs like cold grease. Sternberg’s shadows never looked more like a tomb.
