The Lost World (1925)

Living dinosaurs exist in the far reaches of the Amazon!

The Lost World (1925) is the first film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novel about a land where prehistoric creatures still roam. Explorer Professor Challenger is taking quite a beating in the London press thanks to his claim that living dinosaurs exist in the far reaches of the Amazon. Newspaper reporter Edward Malone learns that this claim originates from a diary given to him by fellow explorer Maple White’s daughter, Paula. Malone’s paper funds an expedition to rescue Maple White, who has been marooned at the top of a high plateau. Joined by renowned hunter John Roxton, and others, the group goes to South America, where they do indeed find a plateau inhabited by pre-historic creatures, one of which they even manage to bring back to London with them.

The first full-length Imperialist Adventure film was 1925’s The Lost World, which established many of the tropes of the cinematic version of the genre. In this adaptation of Conan Doyle’s novel, the Great White Hunters are joined by the romantic interest of a fashionable young lady in search of her father, a previous explorer of the land, and scale a plateau populated with dinosaurs and a rampageous volcano that saves its pyroclastic fury until the expedition arrives. Many more films followed in the tradition of The Lost World during that golden heyday of Hollywood in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. Among the most beloved films of the first one hundred years of motion pictures is King Kong (1933). Among the many people who worked on that film, the one person most responsible for its enduring success was master animator Willis O’Brien. The Lost World (1925) represented O’Brien’s artistic coming of age as a stop-motion animator.

Directed by Harry O. Hoyt
Starring: Wallace Beery, Bessie Love, Lloyd Hughes, Lewis Stone.

Last Woman On Earth (1960)

Ev, along with her husband, Harold, and their lawyer friend Martin, are swimming while on vacation in Puerto Rico. When they resurface, they gradually conclude that an unexplained, temporary interruption of oxygen has killed everyone on the island… maybe even the world!

Back in 1960, with the Cold War at its hottest, the end of the world seemed less like a vaguely disturbing distraction about a possible distant future than like a very real possibility – something that could happen tomorrow. That anxiety fuels THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH, an odd-ball effort from producer-director Roger Corman, about the last three people left alive after the rest of Earth’s population mysteriously disappears, leading to the ultimate love triangle as the two men vie for the affections of the sole remaining woman. Filmed on a shoe-string, the film offers a low-budget apocalypse, too slowly paced to qualify as a good cult film, let alone a classic, and yet a certain aura of existential dread infuses the situation, offering some small redeeming value. – CineFantastique

Stars: Betsy Jones-Moreland, Antony Carbone, Robert Towne

Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1967)

A team of astronauts crash-land on Venus, and find themselves under attack by prehistoric monsters. They kill one of the monsters that turns out to be a god to the Venusian women, bringing the wrath of the alien women down on them and making them determined to destroy the “intruders”.

This film began life as a Soviet-produced work. An American producer then added some new footage and changed the credits to hide the film’s Soviet origin. The original film, “Planeta Bur”, is also known as “Cosmonauts on Venus”, “Planet of Storms”, “Planet of Tempests”, “Planeta Burg”, and “Storm Planet”. The original Russian footage (dubbed into English) is superior, with dazzling sets and costumes, and great outdoor and cavern locations that give it a surreal fantasy look. They have an intimidating robot that looks like “Robbie” on steroids, and a cool land rover to get around. Some Toho-like miniatures are also on hand. The Bogdonavich-lensed stuff is much campier to say the least, with Mamie and the babes looking pretty and biting into rubber fishes filled with fake blood.

Director: Peter Bogdanovich
Starring: Mamie Van Doren, Mary Marr, Paige Lee

Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) – colorized

In California, an old man (Bela Lugosi) grieves the loss of his wife (Vampira) and on the next day he also dies. However, the space soldier Eros and her mate Tanna use an electric device to resurrect them both and the strong Inspector Clay (Tor Johnson) that was murdered by the couple. Their intention is not to conquer Earth but to stop mankind from developing the powerful bomb “Solobonite” that would threaten the universe. When the population of Hollywood and Washington DC sees flying saucers on the sky, a colonel, a police lieutenant, a commercial pilot, his wife and a policeman try to stop the aliens. Aliens resurrect dead humans as zombies and vampires to stop humanity from creating the Solaranite (a sort of sun-driven bomb).

A movie that have done more for “so bad it’s good” cinema, a breathless, nearly budgetless tale in which Wood throws together aliens, zombies, looming nuclear annihilation, and Bela Lugosi. Well, he almost throws in Bela Lugosi: as depicted in Tim Burton’s 1994 biopic Ed Wood, he characteristically spliced in existing footage of the by-then deceased icon of horror film, cast his wife’s chiropractor (instructed to hold a cape over his face) as a double, billed Lugosi as the star, and hoped for the best.

Directed by Edward D. Wood Jr.
Starring Gregory Walcott, Tom Keene, Mona McKinnon, Duke Moore.

Tears of Steel (2012)

Tears of Steel (2012) – Teach the robots what is love!

Tears of Steel (2012) – In a dystopian Netherlands, a group of warriors and scientists who gather at the “Oude Kerk” in a future Amsterdam to stage a crucial event from the past in a desperate attempt to rescue the world from destructive robots. They try to take out the robot menace in a very unique way—they give a captured robot memories, and to do this they build a machine that creates a field of illusions for a man and a robot to meet and teach the robots what love is. All visual effects, computer generated content and compositing work was done within the Blender software package. As with the previous Blender Open Movie Projects, the Blender developers and community worked together to provide a movie studio style production work flow for the team. The results are a complete open source pipeline for visual effects work in Blender including but not limited to camera tracking, rotoscoping, compositing and color grading.

It is an awesome film that tells a heart-warming story along with delivering amazing Visual Effects and some really awesome special features. It seems to be Hubert’s style to never quite tell us the whole story, but still have enough that you can follow and understand.

The Black Hole (2008)

The Black Hole (2008) – Office Copier Prints Round Black Spot

The Black Hole (2008) – A 30 something man, Charlie, is working the night shift. He is very tired and has had a long day already. Everyone else has gone home and he has a huge pile of copying to do, with important deadlines for the next day. He is dazed from sleep deprivation and spinning out a little from his coffee high, necking Pro Plus and washing it down with his 5th cup. The room is atmospherically lit with the sodium glow of florescent lighting and we get a real sense of repetition, monotony and a man who is completely bored with his job – on the edge of quitting but with nowhere else to go. Without warning the copier begins to shake and make strange noises, the scanner flashes repeating over and over, but nothing is coming out of the printer. Charlie is clearly annoyed, hitting the machine and punching buttons. The copier suddenly goes silent and still – Charlie throws his hands up in frustration. Out of desperation he kicks the copier and it spits out one A3 print of a large round black spot centred…

“The Black Hole” is a short and deep tale of greed of human nature. Silently and in three minutes this little short film delivers a single punch-line that is an end to the tale and it does it is a very enjoyable way. It is impressive how the writers and directors Philip Sansom and Olly Williams were able to make a short of less than 3 minutes running time without any line and succeed in transmitting one of the seven deadly sins ( “Avaritia”) so perfectly and with right dose of humor.

Directed by Philip Sansom, Olly Williams. Starring: Napoleon Ryan

Singular (2014)

Singular (2014) – Amazing Superhero Movie

In America where everyone has superpowers, Andy, the only kid who doesn’t have one, struggles to escape a group of bullies led by Sofia, who just wants to make Andy’s life more miserable than it already is. But what begins as an ordinary ‘everyday’ beating ends up spiraling out of control, putting our hero in a life-or-death situation where courage, leadership and sacrifice will guide Andy — and Sofia — to discover the true meaning of “being special”.

We started thinking about superpowers, but we talked a lot about that, you know, when you hear stories about superpowers, you start having the feeling that people need to have some kind of ability or superpower to be special. – Esteban Orozco

The Colombian brother duo Juan Felipe and Carlos Esteban Orozco became familiar names after thriller “Saluda Al Diablo De Mi Parte” a few years back. Their new sci-fi short film “Singular” is so amazing that it simply MUST be made into a full feature movie.

Directed by Juan F. Orozco
Starring: Julieth Restrepo, Jose Restrepo, Albi de Abreu & Camilo Ávila

Tether (2012)

Enter the mysterious world of Tether; a post-apocalyptic setting where mankind is slowly rebuilding from a virus that decimated the world a century ago. Now, mysterious cables are dropping from the sky, revealing an isolated world long forgotten.

Tether is a pilot for a science fiction web series that, quite frankly, deserves to be made. Created by Sam Gorski, David Lovett, and Niko Pueringer of Corridor Digital, Tether drops you into a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been decimated by a viral pandemic. Suddenly, strange cables a.k.a. “tethers” drop from the sky to the earth. Where are they from, and their significance, are shrouded in mystery. Interestingly Tether is not a new idea or production, but was first conceived of two years ago and eventually resulted in Tether: First Snow, the events of which are referenced in the new video. As the duo themselves explain, the production of Tether as a concept, has ironically always been tethered to a commission, the latest apparently from Machinima. However, after numerous aborted attempts, Sam & Niko of Corridor Digital have decided to continue with Tether, funded personally but with the potential for a Kickstarted campaign in the future. The Corridor Digital team have produced a teaser video and pilot episode which effectively draws you into this intriguing new world with gorgeous cinematography, solid performances by the cast, and stunning visual effects. I love the fact that more and more original, high quality and interesting sci-fi content is being created for online viewing because we are certainly having a tough time finding it on network television!

Sync (2012)

Sync (2012) Brilliant Short Film

Charlie Cooper is a special agent of the future able to transfer his consciousness to bio-mechanical bodies at will. But when a computer virus corrupts his system, he must face one of his greatest challenges yet: mortality.

I must say that Sync is the best web-series I have found on the Internet, trumping things like VGHS. Its writing is a perfect mix of action, thriller, and romance, and the plot is singularly unique. Add to that great actors, smart directors, and skilled VFX artists, and you get an amazing, must-see show. Great Action Scenes throughout the Film. Each moment left you Hanging on the edge of your seat wondering what was going to happen next. overall I believe the produced did a great job all the way down to the VFX. I would strongly suggest that those under 16 shouldn’t be allowed to watch it do to the graphic Gun Violence, Drinking and smoking, and Language. The script perfectly balances action, humor, romance, and character development.

[Vacuity is] worth the very meager amount of time it asks of you…It’s pretty killer that a sparse 13-minute film with an ‘$80’ set can tell 10 times the story of the Transformers movies.” – cracked.com

The Gate (2011)

Extreme mutations and junk DNA with the special military forces of the future!

A recent group of extreme mutations leading to death has triggered a parliamentary enquiry which is looking back on the 3 notable cases, their handling and ways to prevent this in the future.

Filming, editing, FX, acting, all top-notch. The idea for the tank suits that the soldiers wear, came from news reports that troops in Afghanistan were inadequately equipped to do their job properly. The Gate is set a few years in the future and suggests that in this time certain specialist troops been given appropriate body protection to deal with IED’s, mortar attacks and bomb disposal. Atmosphere is established and maintained tremendously effectively… this is essentially a series of vignettes connected by “what’s really going on”. The reference to ‘redundant gene sequences’ is based on real genetic science and is often called ‘junk DNA’. This is the term used to describe the 95% of human DNA that appears to perform no particular function. The realism really sells us on what’s going on – we accept the handful of sci-fi aspects(all of them quite credible) in this readily, because it’s clearly the real world.

Wayfare Entertainment has acquired the rights to produce and finance a feature-length version of the short thriller The Gate from its director Matt Westrup and producer Spencer Friend.

Directed by Matt Westrup. Starring: John Mawson, Robert Rowe, Jonathan Andrews

R’ha (2013)

A member of an alien species is being interrogated and tortured by a machine. The alien comments rudely, and the machine says this response is “inappropriate”. It electrocutes the alien a few times, and mentions a “rendezvous”. The alien’s backstory is revealed, showing that his race was at war with the machines they created. He, along with his fleet, protected his people, but he was captured. Later on, the machine explains that they wish to gain independence through the extermination of the alien’s race. The alien soon breaks free, tearing the machine’s head off. He took his chance, and escaped on his ship. Meanwhile, the machine turns itself back on, and starts tracking the alien back to his home world.

If you haven’t seen this yet, you can expect nothing short of the most mind-blowing short film of your life. “R’ha” seems to have gained conceptual influence from the two video games series: Starcraft and Half Life 2. Therefore, expect a plot pertaining to apocalyptic sci-fi. Lot of details give credibility to 3D with great compositing! It’s intense. It’s thrilling. It’s epic. “R’ha” has exceptional visuals and animation. The sound effects were also phenomenal — constantly resonating heart-shaking, intense sounds which complement and supplement the film. This short CGI film resonates a truly dark atmosphere and could be classified as a horror film.

‘Star Wars’ Producer Rick McCallum will adapt Sci-Fi Short Film ‘R’Ha’ into a full feature!

Directed by Kaleb Lechowski. Starring: David Masterson

Mis-drop (2013)

Amazing Sci-Fi Film Mis-drop (2013)

300 years in the future, a forensic accountant reviews the video stream from one mercenary’s drop-pod which has been damaged during the initial stages of a colonial invasion. The biggest joys of short films is to see things that we would never see in feature length films. Whether it be the type of story or the way it was told, from filming technique to acting methods. In Ferand Peek’s Sci-fi thriller ‘Mis-Drop’ we get a unique view with a one shot from a mercenary’s drop-pod.

What do you do if you want to tell an epic sci-fi story set 300 years in the future but know from the outset that vast CG vistas and epic space battles are well out of your budgetary reach? Well if you’re New Zealand director Ferand Peek, you combine your knowledge of the genre with a spot of lateral thinking to literally reframe the problem into a compelling, claustrophobic tale of a rookie mercenary’s first disastrous combat mission. Peek joins us to share how he shepherded Mis-drop from concept to screen, teaching himself compositing along the way.

So when I started planning the project I hadn’t really done any visual effects before. I had worked on-set for years and felt that I could capture anything but I needed to do a little research to make sure that by the end of the shoot we had all the correct ingredients for the composite. Initially I wanted to do the visual effects before we shot the film and actually project them onto a real piece of glass in the helmet and then hang the pod off the ceiling so that we could have some really realistic movement acting upon the main character when the parachute opens. We did some testing and it was only abandoned in favour of a more simple approach a week or so before we were going to shoot. – Ferand Peek

The Flying Man (2013)

Eye For An Eye in a superhero world!

A super powered vigilante defies the law using extreme violence to fight crime. A new flying superhero has arrived in town however this one appears to be targeting specific people to kill them – dropping them from the sky or in front of trains etc. It soon becomes apparent that his targets are criminals which, while not morally right, makes the criminal community nervous – not least of which is Mike, a former cop driving to a gun deal.

For every 1000 pop culture theorists who can deconstruct the superhero genre at the drop of a hat, there may only be one who can write a scenario and screenplay that teases something truly exciting and accessible therefrom. This definitely has the potential of being a brilliant full length feature. As long as the corporates don’t kill the whole thing in their effort to make money. The Flying Man is a VFX-driven short film envisioned, financed, produced, directed, edited and co-written by DIY filmmaker Marcus Alqueres.

Directed by: Marcus Alqueres. Starring: Nick Smyth, Rick Cordeiro, Justin T. Lee
