Tears of Steel (2012)

Tears of Steel (2012) – Teach the robots what is love!

Tears of Steel (2012) – In a dystopian Netherlands, a group of warriors and scientists who gather at the “Oude Kerk” in a future Amsterdam to stage a crucial event from the past in a desperate attempt to rescue the world from destructive robots. They try to take out the robot menace in a very unique way—they give a captured robot memories, and to do this they build a machine that creates a field of illusions for a man and a robot to meet and teach the robots what love is. All visual effects, computer generated content and compositing work was done within the Blender software package. As with the previous Blender Open Movie Projects, the Blender developers and community worked together to provide a movie studio style production work flow for the team. The results are a complete open source pipeline for visual effects work in Blender including but not limited to camera tracking, rotoscoping, compositing and color grading.

It is an awesome film that tells a heart-warming story along with delivering amazing Visual Effects and some really awesome special features. It seems to be Hubert’s style to never quite tell us the whole story, but still have enough that you can follow and understand.

Directed by Ian Hubert.
Starring: Derek de Lint, Sergio Hasselbaink, Rogier Schippers

I Ship It (2014)

I Ship It (2014) – Life After A Bad Breakup

I Ship It (2014) manages to avoid most rom-con cliches. After a bad breakup, Zoe Smallman decides to take down her ex-boyfriend in a wizard rock battle of the bands The possibility that Zoe is attracted to Charlie is brought up very early in the story — the fact that it’s addressed quickly instead of being dragged out threw me for a loop, in a good way. Also, despite her scathing performance at the concert, the plan to “ruin Peter Hackett” doesn’t quite happen the way Zoe hopes. I’m more than okay with this choice because in real life, jerks don’t always get their comeuppance, even when we try to give it to them. It’s that fact, and the openended-ness of the film, that safely maneuvers I Ship It away from the saccharine conclusion we might expect. Slightly disappointed they got together in the end, cause that’s a little cliche, I mean not every happy ending has to be a romantic one and also I was hoping this would be about two hurt friends going through their hard break ups together but pulling each other through it because friends are more important than relationships and you can care about someone without wanting to bang them. Not to give away the entire ending, but they don’t go for the easy resolution, vouching instead to suggest that our Hufflepuffian protagonist did learn more about herself along the way, and that’s satisfying in itself. It doesn’t feel like a cheap resolution… although I will admit the last line of the film is a little cheesy and on the nose, but it’s forgivable. I’ll let it slide. I Ship It is a fun, quick little movie that is well worth your time if you’re a fan of any of the actors or if you’re a part of the Potter fandom. Plus it’s online for free — you have no excuse not to check it out.

What a beautiful little short film. I’m blown away! Loved it all, the script, the wardrobe, backdrops, cinematography, the actor’s looks and the acting was AWESOME.

Grape Soda (2014)

Grape Soda (2014) – Honest Drama of a man who drifts into a deep depression!

Grape Soda (2014) – His daughter passed away from cancer and he wasn’t there thats why his wife slept with another man because the death of their daughter made them become distant from one another. Instead of him and her talking about it and being their for each other he drifted away into a deep depression.

I’m lost for words! I hope you don’t mind me blowing your inbox up soon. This is amazing true ART! Excellent work. Your use of inference is spectacular, by putting the right things in the right places you never even have to show the real thing, aka the affair. Great work! Everything about this piece is beautiful. Great job! Such an honest film! Excellent work! Not only are the visuals beautiful, but so is the story. I often see shorts that are left unresolved. It seems to be the “artsy” thing to do, but this is a short with a complete story. I like how you used subtle things like the lunch box to foreshadow the daughter’s death. As mentioned above I like the way you showed the affair without being graphic. I think it’s far more emotional that way. You and Leonardo dicaprio are the definitions of underrated. Fantastic work.

Cargo (2013)

Cargo (2013) – Father Protects his Daughter in a zombie apocalypse!

Cargo (2013) – Stranded in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, a man sets in motion an unlikely plan to protect the precious cargo he carries: his infant daughter. Finalist of Tropfest Australia 2013 that delivers more than whole season of Walking Dead.

Cargo is a 7 minute movie, so It’s difficult to discuss much about the film without giving away too much of the story. What I can say is that this (short film) was crafted by very skilled hands by people who take film making seriously. Never have I ever thought in my entire life a seven minute zombie film would make me cry and think as much as Cargo did. As a parent and as an avid zombie enthusiast it really did it for me. What’s fascinating is that it goes to horror genre but the film is totally free of on screen violence, adult situations and foul language.

Starring: Andy Rodoreda, Alison Gallagher, Ruth Venn

Dealer (2014)

Short film Dealer is a powerful piece of storytelling of the life and atmosphere of crime world.

Short film Dealer follows a dealer during a rough night in London’s underground. The excellent title track from Burial’s Rival Dealer is the inspiration and soundtrack to a new short film. Dealer, written and directed by Ben Dawkins, is a gritty short made with the blessing of

Burial

and Hyperdub. A raw and powerful piece of storytelling of the life and atmosphere of crime world. West London vibes, incredible lighting, great vibe, amazing direction and performances. Made with the kind permission of William Bevan aka BURIAL. Thanks to Will, Marcus and all the good people at Hyperdub for their enthusiasm. When Will Bevan dropped Rival Dealer fans and critics went ballistic – and not just because it was a new Burial release. The three track EP was divisive for the right reasons; a sonic minefield as dark as you’d expect from Burial, but with more human inflections than anything we’d heard from him before. Scattered with vocal samples, meddled with symptoms of both hope and confusion, Rival Dealer sounds as right for the dance floor as it does on the lonely night bus home.

Short film Dealer Review:

There’s a scene I draw from in Takeshi Kitano’s Violent Cop. It’s a very shocking moment, as you don’t in any way see it coming. I wanted to do something similar for Dealer that in essence would keep the audience hanging. If I’m honest I was a little disappointed with the final shot, as it was exactly what I intended. Time is never on your side when delving into budget filmmaking, and we were already 2 hours over at this point. A lesson learned, I think. – Ben Dawkins

Brilliant mood setting everything. Awesome sound design, the aerials, and time lapse usage. It is slow in a few areas but still, it’s essentially a music video. And an amazing one!

Cast and Crew:

Directed by Ben Dawkins
Starring Osi Okerafor, Jacqueline Alcarva, Princess Dadson

Something Left, Something Taken (2010)

Everyone who enters a crime scene, leaves something behind and takes something away. ‘Something Left, Something Taken’ is a 10 minute animated dark comedy about a vacationing couples’ encounter with a man they believe to be the Zodiac Killer. Watercolor studies were used to explore mood and atmosphere. Though these color sketches were done very quickly, most of the core design ideas were kept in tact in the final frames from the film. The movie was written with storyboard thumbnails. In fact, there was never a formal screenplay for the film and the dialog was more or less improvised in recording sessions. Final characters were constructed from fabric, rope, clay, ping pong balls, erasers and soy milk carton. Then they were photographed and assembled in After Effects.

Sean (2014)

Sean (2014) – Amazing Documentary

In the latest installment of Mainline’s renowned Tribute series, director Ryan Reichenfeld returns to his hometown of Lake Havasu City to tell the story of Arizona teenager Sean. A small-town skate enthusiast with dreams of making it big, he wakes up every morning at 3:30 AM to flip burgers at Jack In The Box restaurant, earning just $60 a day. In this special short film, Reichenfeld shows us the alienating and ugly – as well as beautiful and touching – parts of the world surrounding Sean. It is a raw and compassionate portrait of the difficulties of growing up, and captures a way of life that is rarely seen on this side of the lens. Mainline’s AG Rojas caught up with Reichenfeld to discuss exactly what inspired him about Sean and his unassuming way of life.

Ryan Reichenfeld is name you should get used to hearing. The man’s ambition might exceed his grasp, but by God, he has one hell of a grasp on what he’s doing. After Justin Timberlake, Adidas and RAC came calling, a lot of people started tuning into his way of thinking. Ryan Reichenfeld is known for his work on Justin Timberlake: TKO (2013), Cannibal Suburbia (2007) and Things You Don’t Tell… (2006).

I’ve always been attracted to eccentric, ballsy, sensitive, lone wolf, weirdos. Growing up, I didn’t care about anything but skateboarding. If it didn’t have to do with skateboarding I didn’t want to hear about it, waste my time with it, because it was probably lame. My favorite skateboarder, and part role model, is Heath Kirchart. He’s the human incarnation of “speak softly and carry a big stick” or “actions speak louder than words”. As I expanded my horizons after I got injured I discovered Ernest Hemingway. The Sun Also Rises and A Moveable Feast spoke to me, the way the characters carried themselves through life and how they dealt with problems made me feel less alone. After I got hurt skateboarding and couldn’t continue a career with it I was taken about by a slew of directors for different reasons. Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, P.T. Anderson, Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer. They all seemed to focus on honesty in a different ways, and the way they stylized their honesty is what interested me. – Ryan Reichenfeld

Alone (2013)

Alone (2013) – Alone in The World Short Film!

Years after the world ended and the human race perished; this is the only man left standing. How did he survive? What caused the outbreak? We don’t know. No one does. This short film gives you an inside look on what the only man left alive does on a day-to-day basis, what he does to survive, kill time, and keep himself sane.

The film is a monologue, centring around the nameless ‘last man on Earth‘ contemplating his isolation and existence as he goes about his day-to-day activities; listening to old voice mails, eating canned food and searching for new things to eat in abandoned houses (that just so happen to have keys hidden in obvious places). – The Whispering Critic
