Vanishing Point (1971): Poetic Journey of Freedom and Rebellion

Richard C. Sarafian’s Iconic Road Movie Transcends Genre Conventions, Enveloping Audiences in a Haunting Exploration of Identity and Society

Vanishing Point, the 1971 cult classic directed by Richard C. Sarafian, is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking film that defies categorization. A powerful blend of action, drama, and existential exploration, Vanishing Point takes viewers on a haunting journey through the vast American landscape, while delving into themes of freedom, rebellion, and the search for meaning.

Film follows the enigmatic character of Kowalski, a former race car driver turned deliveryman, who takes on a high-stakes challenge to transport a car from Colorado to San Francisco within a tight deadline. As he embarks on this dangerous and adrenaline-fueled journey, the film explores the depths of Kowalski’s psyche and the societal forces that push him to the edge of his sanity.

The film’s headline-grabbing car chases and high-octane action sequences serve as a metaphorical backdrop for a deeper exploration of the human condition. Through its poetic and symbolic imagery, Vanishing Point challenges societal norms, exposing the limitations and contradictions of a society that stifles individuality and conformity. Kowalski’s rebellious spirit becomes a metaphor for the inherent desire to break free from the constraints imposed by the world around us.

Sarafian’s direction is masterful, immersing the audience in the vastness of the American landscape and capturing a sense of existential longing and isolation. The film’s striking cinematography, paired with a hauntingly atmospheric soundtrack, creates an ethereal and otherworldly experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

Beneath the surface of its action-packed narrative, the film raises questions about identity, purpose, and the quest for freedom. As Kowalski hurtles through the desolate highways, encountering various characters along the way, each interaction serves as a catalyst for introspection and existential reflection.

Vanishing Point‘s impact extends beyond its thematic exploration, as it also serves as a reflection of the turbulent times in which it was made. Released during a period of social and political unrest in America, the film resonated with audiences as a symbol of counterculture resistance and a call for individual autonomy.

Vanishing Point is an artistic and intellectually stimulating masterpiece that transcends genre conventions. Its combination of gripping action, poetic imagery, and existential depth make it a film that demands contemplation and invites viewers to question their own place in the world. Prepare to be enthralled by its powerful visuals, captivated by its enigmatic protagonist, and left with lingering thoughts about the nature of freedom and the human spirit.

Marked (2021)

Tension builder revenge flick with amazing atmosphere!

The plot revolves around Sasha, a tattoo artist (played by Daniel Giacomini in his debut film), who is confronted with his past when a client (portrayed by none other than Eric Roberts!) deciphers the significance of each mark on Sasha’s body.

Excellent showcase of Eric Roberts’ acting prowess!

Despite its brevity, this film serves as an excellent showcase of Roberts’ acting prowess. Remarkably, he churned out four more movies in the time it took to write that sentence. Undoubtedly, we will make every effort to watch each one. Berg’s wise decision to cast Roberts raised the bar, transforming this short feature into a remarkable work that goes above and beyond what’s typically seen.

Directed by Matthew Avery Berg.
Starring Eric Roberts, Daniel Giacomini.

Raid – Escape from Tarkov (2019)

Amazing modern combat sequences with no happy ending!

Two warring Private Military Companies are engaged on missions in Tarkov, a city overrun with Scavengers. Raid, miniseries combined into a feature film is based upon Escape from Tarkov game. It is a hardcore and realistic online first-person action RPG/Simulator with MMO features and a story-driven walkthrough.

> Ezcape from Tarkov shows combat scenes quite colorfully and well, a couple of heads higher than they usually shoot in a big cinema. The abundance of slow motion and the jerky picture do not look very good. Everything looks beautiful and spectacular here. Also in this film, the atmosphere inside the squad is well shown. Squad members interact with each other by transmitting information.

Quite the idea, actually getting the audience to see what the MTF (A subset in the SCP foundation, a fictional organization) deal with on a daily basis and the master minds behind this really deliver. You’ll love the authenticity to militaristic procedures and want to see more. Watching it all unfold is an intense adventure!

A great example of tactical horror!

>I watched this movie in the comfort of my own home, and I have to say I have never felt more excited to see where a film goes. The story was well-rounded, and it felt more military-ish than many movies with triple its budget. Split Second (1992) – Ultimate hidden gem

Split Second with Rutger Hauer: A Monster Movie Masterpiece of Magnificent Proportions!

“Split Second” is like a wild ride on a futuristic rollercoaster with Rutger Hauer as your charming and slightly unhinged conductor. With its blend of sci-fi, action, and horror, this movie is a thrilling ride from start to finish.
Sure, some might say that the special effects haven’t aged all that well, but honestly, who needs fancy CGI when you’ve got Rutger Hauer wielding a giant harpoon gun? Plus, the cheesy one-liners are so bad they’re good, like a perfectly cooked piece of bacon – you just can’t help but enjoy it.
All in all, “Split Second” is a campy, over-the-top, and thoroughly entertaining flick that will have you cheering for Rutger Hauer’s grizzled detective as he battles a monstrous creature in the flooded streets of London. It’s a true gem of ’90s B-movie goodness that’s sure to leave you with a grin on your face and a sense of satisfaction in your heart. The Aftermath (1982) – The world destroyed by nuclear war

What comes after World War III?

1h 35min | Sci-Fi, Thriller | 1982 (USA)

Two astronauts return to Earth to find that it has been destroyed by nuclear war. L.A. has been taken over by Cutter and his gang of outlaw bikers. Cutter rapes and pillages. There are also mutants. The astronauts hook-up with the only normal people left: two women, a boy and a girl!

This movie wasn’t that bad. When I was a little kid I rented it and it always seemed eerie to me. If your bored one day just rent it, who cares if its totaly low-budget. It’s fun to watch because I wish I could make a movie that like someday.

Mix of “The Planet of the Apes”, “The Omega Man”, “The Last Man on Earth” and “The Stand”

This movie is pretty entertaining really. It borrows from The Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man or The Last Man on Earth, and The Stand among others (although every movie borrows from something). Yet the movie still has a style all its own and while it is mostly a very funny movie that was supposed to be serious, it does offer a bit of creativity. Has several scenes that most directors would not have included, that’s not a bad thing. A good movie for the fatalist. Worth watching for everyone else. Except kids I guess, there are some scenes of gore. (head explodes, a knife through the head via the eye, lots of bullets flying, dead bloody kid, mutants, and decayed bodies).

Fun Fact: The beach scene was shot on the same location as Planet of the Apes (1968). At around 13 minutes, Steve Barkett can be seen climbing over the rock where the Statue of Liberty is located in the earlier film.

Written and Directed by: Steve Barkett
Starring: Lynne Margulies, Steve Barkett, Sid Haig

Nostalgia about the better times – “Troll Bridge” (2019)

A love-letter to Terry Pratchett and Discworld

Cohen the Barbarian was angry. Angry that he never died in battle, angry that the world had forgotten him, and angry that his knees were starting to play up in the cold. He was also angry that his faithful mount had been gifted the ability of magical speech. The horse was insisting that they had made a wrong turn back at Slice. He was also angry that the horse was probably right. This was not how it was supposed to end for the barbarian. This was not how the Discworld’s greatest hero imagined it at all.

The nostalgia is emanating through the screen. The nostalgia about the better times. Times when trolls were scary, heroes were epic and Sir Terry Pratchett was alive and writing a book every year or two.

A fantasy world with a comedic tone

When people say that disc world books are comedy fantasy books, it shows that they’ve only ever read the colour of magic. The disc world books are genera fiction, set in a fantasy world with a comedic tone (as no one in their right mind would describe nightwatch as a comedy), but the one theme which ties all the books (even the colour of magic) is “these changing times”, and it’s a theme I love so much. The original short story was great, a troll and a barbarian talking about how much things have changed, and lamenting the loss of the old days. Thus film was spot on, and it got me in the emotions. I think Terry would have loved this, and maybe would have asked why he didn’t get a casting call to play Cohen 😛 brilliant work and I’m glad you shared it.

A team of elite female commandos – “Mercenaries” (2014)

Expendables with chicks!

The President’s daughter is captured and imprisoned while touring a war zone, so a team of elite female commandos is assembled to infiltrate a women’s prison for a daring rescue.

Mediocre and cheesy, but somehow enjoyable and fun! Best Asylum movie!

This movie is call Mercenaries, but the version i have is really call Expendabelles 3.0. Basically this continue the tradition of THE ASYLUM of copying stuff if i can say, even tough the real Expendabelles is not even out (or will it ever be?) But truth is, this was actually pretty fun. Sure the scenario is really over the top cartoonish, and in no way believable, but i actually enjoyed the action, following those girls around and so on. Got to see it as somewhat of a comic book movie or something.

Directed by Christopher Ray.
Starring Zoë Bell, Cynthia Rothrock, Kristanna Loken, Vivica A. Fox, Brigitte Nielsen.
