Fight for One million dollars – “A Little Trip to Heaven” (2005)

Solid and Bold indie thriller

A husband and wife tangle with an investigator over her dead brother’s million-dollar insurance policy. Visually, it’s so beautiful… and yet stark and haunting (apparently it was filmed in Iceland). But what I really found engaging was that it was a noir-esquire mystery but with a very realistic feel. When opportunities present themselves for the film to go down a formulaic road, it doesn’t. There’s something strangely real about the film, from the first-rate acting, the dark tone, to the deliberate pace…

Cast includes legends like Peter Coyote and Forest Whitaker

After a suspicious fatal car accident in Hastings where the identity of the victim was forged, the Quality Life insurance company sends their smart investigator Abe Holt to identify the body. The unique beneficiary of the one million dollars death benefit is the sister of the victim, Isold, who lives with her son Thor and her husband Fred in a poor cabin in the middle of nowhere. Along the investigation, Abe discloses the truth about the fraud, but feels sorry for Isold and Thor and tries to help them with tragic consequences.

A real good thriller film – “Miner’s Mountain” (2019)

Everything is amazing – the acting, the camera, the lighting, omg even the final credits!

A Sheriff comes under fire when two S.B.I. Agents question his involvement in an unsolved murder that shares distinct similarities with a recent homicide.

It is more than a real good short horror. The cinematography, the acting, the music are just great. The story is a fine , precise embroidery about guilt, family, memories, death and unknown. Short, a smart crafted film.

Wendigo inspired creatures

The creatures resemble wendigo, not exactly in appearance, but in origins and abilities, the miners were closed off in the mountain, so if they were trapped instead of crushed then the miners may have resorted to cannibalism, which would have made the wendigo.

Written, Produced and Directed by Bennett Pellington
Starring: Henry Bazemore Jr., Anthony Reynolds, Myke Holmes, Julie Ivey

Pregnant Woman vs Vicious Life Form – “5th Passenger” (2017)

Fun independent effort on a small budget!

Plot: In the aftermath of an oppressive class war, a pregnant officer aboard an escape pod must struggle to survive with her remaining crew when a mysterious and vicious life form attacks, determined to become the dominant species.

This movie casts several members of the Star Trek family. Manu Intyrami (Icheb, Star Trek Voyager), Tim Russ (Tuvok, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine), Arman Schimerman (Quark, Deep Space Nine), Martina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi, Start Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Enterprise, First Contact, Star Trek Generations and 4 other Star Trek movies), Hana Hatae (Deep Space Nine, Star Trek The Next Generation, the daughter of transporter Chief Miles O’Brien) and Doug Jones from the upcoming series Star Trek Discovery.

Star Trek meets Aliens

The combination of these actors as well as the other main character actors blends together very well. Although the plot does follow the same premise as the “Aliens” movies, these actors do bring their own distinct version of their characters to this movie. The CGI effects are very good and are convincing to the viewer. Some of the plot lines do tend to become slow at times, but the action scenes are very realistic. Being a Star Trek fan from the very beginning, I was impressed to see all the incredible talent these actors brought to this movie. To see these Star Trek actors in different roles was a nice change and they played their roles extremely well. I would add this movie to my Sci Fi collection.

Directed by: Scotty Baker
Starring: Morgan Lariah, Manu Intiraymi, Doug Jones

Don’t Open Your Eyes (2018)

All kinds of spooky!

When an apathetic home hospice nurse learns he shares a sinister connection with the mysterious old woman in his care, it forces him to confront a darkness he never could have imagined.

>Compared to a lot of blood and thunder, teen horror movies, this one came as a much welcomed, breath of fresh air. It’s much more in the style of ‘Hereditary’, rather than many of it’s inferior ilk and the actress who played the elderly (dying lady) was rather excellent. Can’t understand the negative reviews for this one and deserves a much more considered, careful attention.

Directed by Dmitry Yun
Starring: Tom Kemnitz Jr., Gergana Mellin, Jamie Carroll, Travis Cox

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are called to save Sir Baskerville from a curse that has plagued his family for centuries!

Although this version of the story differs from the original novel, there is much to recommend it for. The film is well paced and atmospheric but it’s greatest strength is the excellent cast, particularly the three leads. It’s nice to see Christopher Lee playing the romantic role as a change to his usual monsters and Peter Cushing is brilliant as Holmes, his performance being the definitive as he makes the character believable and interesting. This film also features the best ever casting of Dr Watson. Andre Morell moves away from the bumbling fool of other Holmes films and makes Watson intelligent, capable and even dashing. Morell’s charismatic performance is all the more welcome as ‘Hounds’ is the story which puts Watson centre stage for most of the plot. It’s a shame he never played the part again as he and Cushing make the perfect Holmes and Watson. If only Hammer had made a series of Holmes films.

Directed by: Terence Fisher
Written by: Arthur Conan Doyle (based on the novel by)
Starring: Peter Cushing, André Morell, Christopher Lee

The Day After (1983)

The effects of a devastating nuclear holocaust on small-town residents of eastern Kansas!

No matter how poorly the effects or the acting, or how graphic and extravagant the visuals were all these films serve one purpose. To educate us on the value we have as creatures that not only have control over our individual destinies but the destiny of our world and the lesser species. To show us what the cost would be, no matter how graphic and obscene. The Day After, Threads, Testament, The War Game, Failsafe, Wargames, and all the other media programming that has shown us the horror of nuclear war. Each has its strengths and flaws, its highs and lows, but the message inherrently remains the same.

Arctic Blue (1993): Rutger Hauer Freezes the Screen in This Icy Gem!

Buckle up, snow bunnies! “Arctic Blue” (1993) is here to give you chills, spills, and Rutger Hauer at his icily-cool best. Directed by Peter Masterson, this frosty thriller takes you on a sub-zero rollercoaster ride that’s so cool, it’ll make Elsa want to trade in her castle for a parka!

Set against the backdrop of the frozen Alaskan wilderness, Rutger Hauer dons the parka like a pro, giving us a masterclass in frostbite fashion. As an out-of-his-depth drifter with a knack for survival, Hauer doesn’t just brave the cold, he makes it shiver right back at him.

Masterson, clearly a maestro of the icy spectacle, serves up visuals that could put a penguin in a parka! The frozen landscapes are so breathtaking, they make the polar bears jealous. And the action sequences? They’re as sharp and crisp as an Arctic breeze, leaving you on the edge of your seat and clutching your hot cocoa for dear life.

But what truly elevates “Arctic Blue” is Hauer’s charisma, which defrosts even the iciest of scenes. His witty one-liners could melt glaciers, and his icy stare could give the North Pole a run for its money. Whether he’s outsmarting predators or cracking jokes colder than the ice floes, Hauer steals the show like a true snow ninja.

The supporting cast, while not quite as chill-inducing as Hauer, do a commendable job of keeping up with the frozen pace. Their interactions with the man of the hour create a delightful dynamic that’s as entertaining as watching penguins try to waltz.

In the end, “Arctic Blue” is a frozen fiesta that’ll have you laughing, gasping, and reaching for your favorite fleece. Rutger Hauer’s star power heats up the Arctic, and Masterson’s direction keeps the frostbite firmly at bay. So grab your mittens and embark on an adventure that’s cooler than a snowman in shades. “Arctic Blue” is the winter wonder you didn’t know you needed!

This is one of the few films I’ve seen where I feel completely relaxed. Even with the violence that fills it, this film has such a relaxing, gentle beauty about it – not to mention the exhilarating Alaskan scenery this film showcases.

Directed by Peter Masterson
Starring: Rutger Hauer, Dylan Walsh, Rya Kihlstedt

Next Floor (2008)

A grotesque vision of Hell by Denis Villeneuve!

During an opulent banquet, eleven pampered guests participate in what appears to be a ritualistic gastronomic carnage. In this grotesque universe, an unexpected sequence of events destabilizes the endless symphony of abundance.

Material wealth, possessions, and the things of this life are not to be our gods and we are not to look to these to satisfy us or to fill us. Our consumption can consume us and our appetites can control us, if we let it, and if it is left unchecked. The film Next Floor paints this picture vividly for the viewer.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Daddy’s Girl (2018)

Sadistic DNA

A young woman held captive by her stepfather becomes the focus of a female vigilante.

Director Julian Richards told that the script was originally written more than 10 years ago. It was at the time of SAW and “torture porn” as the main keyword. That version has been rewritten in the meantime to better adapt to changes in audience appreciation. The director considered this a logical consequence of the post-MeToo era we live in nowadays.

Toxic Skies (2008)

Global virus conspiracy and paranoia

World Health Organization Doctor who uncovers the real cause of an epidemic is the government’s secret chem-trail program.

The acting was excellent, the soundtrack pretty good, the plot certainly original and the whole idea of people poisoned on purpose is frightening but surprisingly realistic. Combine Warning Sign (1985) with Criminal Minds, and you’ll get Toxic Skies. I highly recommend watching it, I’m honestly very shocked that this little movie only has a 5/10 overall user rating. I personally really enjoyed it. Don’t underestimate Toxic Skies, it might be just a small movie but once you see it, you’ll be questioning all sorts of things in society.

Directed by Neil Mcenery-West.
With Louise Brealey, Billy Postlethwaite, Sheila Reid, Lee Ross.
