Alone in the Dark (2005) Resurfaces with Slater and Dorff

A Gritty Descent into Darkness or a Dim Flicker?

“Alone in the Dark” returns to the screen with a star-studded duo — Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff —leading us on a journey that teeters between rediscovering the classic horror vibe and struggling to keep its flame alive. Directed by a visionary hand, the film navigates the uncharted territory of suspense and supernatural intrigue, but does it truly succeed in leaving an indelible mark on the genre?

In this reboot of the beloved cult classic, Slater brings his signature intensity to the role of a seasoned investigator, while Dorff immerses himself in the character of a tormented scientist. The chemistry between the two is undeniable, adding depth and authenticity to the story’s unfolding chaos.

Director masterfully plays with light and shadow, constructing a palpable atmosphere of foreboding and unease. The film’s visual effects hold their own, often becoming the very embodiment of the darkness lurking within the narrative. However, while some scenes effectively grip the audience, others border on cliché, making it a mixed experience.

“Alone in the Dark” ambitiously tackles ancient mysteries, supernatural forces, and a race against time, all intricately woven into a high-stakes plot. Yet, the screenplay sometimes feels like a patchwork of ideas, leaving certain arcs less developed than desired. The film strives to fuse gritty action sequences with mind-bending revelations, though not always striking the perfect balance.

Slater’s charisma and Dorff’s intensity breathe life into the characters, yet one wishes for more substantial dialogues that could have further accentuated their performances. The movie tantalizingly hints at the profound psychological underpinnings of its characters, but doesn’t entirely delve into their complexities.

Despite its occasional stumbles, “Alone in the Dark” offers an intriguing mix of jump scares and slow-burning tension. It taps into a nostalgia for classic horror while attempting to carve out its own niche in the modern landscape. If you’re seeking a film that dares to weave a web of mystery and deliver a few spine-tingling moments, this might be a flick to consider. But does it cast a spell that lasts beyond the theater? That’s a question the shadows hold the answer to.

Catching The Black Widow (2017)

Thriller based on True Events

The brave story of a tenacious New Zealander who will stop at nothing to bring justice to her brother’s murder.

If it wasn’t a true story, I wouldn’t rate it so highly, but since this is a relatively new case that has been making headlines in New Zealand for a while, I was interested in the details. Apparently based on Lee-Anne Cartier’s book, it shows from her perspective the price she paid for her relentless search for evidence to bring the case against Helen Milner. Helen Milner was eventually convicted, but the police really seemed to be dragging their feet. I’m not sure if that’s entirely true, but that’s how Lee-Anne feels, and it’s easy to empathize with her as she fights for justice for her deceased brother. One aspect that sounded real to me was the portrayal of Helen Milner as a vicious narcissist who constantly lied and gaslighted Lee Anne. It’s both real and disturbing.

Written and Directed by: Thomas Robins
Starring: Katherine McRae, Phillip Spencer-Harris, Aidee Walker

The Aftermath (1982) – The world destroyed by nuclear war

What comes after World War III?

1h 35min | Sci-Fi, Thriller | 1982 (USA)

Two astronauts return to Earth to find that it has been destroyed by nuclear war. L.A. has been taken over by Cutter and his gang of outlaw bikers. Cutter rapes and pillages. There are also mutants. The astronauts hook-up with the only normal people left: two women, a boy and a girl!

This movie wasn’t that bad. When I was a little kid I rented it and it always seemed eerie to me. If your bored one day just rent it, who cares if its totaly low-budget. It’s fun to watch because I wish I could make a movie that like someday.

Mix of “The Planet of the Apes”, “The Omega Man”, “The Last Man on Earth” and “The Stand”

This movie is pretty entertaining really. It borrows from The Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man or The Last Man on Earth, and The Stand among others (although every movie borrows from something). Yet the movie still has a style all its own and while it is mostly a very funny movie that was supposed to be serious, it does offer a bit of creativity. Has several scenes that most directors would not have included, that’s not a bad thing. A good movie for the fatalist. Worth watching for everyone else. Except kids I guess, there are some scenes of gore. (head explodes, a knife through the head via the eye, lots of bullets flying, dead bloody kid, mutants, and decayed bodies).

Fun Fact: The beach scene was shot on the same location as Planet of the Apes (1968). At around 13 minutes, Steve Barkett can be seen climbing over the rock where the Statue of Liberty is located in the earlier film.

Written and Directed by: Steve Barkett
Starring: Lynne Margulies, Steve Barkett, Sid Haig
