Portal: No Escape (2011)

A woman (played by Danielle Rayne) wakes up in a locked room with no way out and no contact with anyone. However, the discovery of a very odd gun changes that situation dramatically.

There’s something about this film that makes it stand tall among all the other video game fan-made projects out there. For one thing, it’s brilliantly edited and scored. Video podcast host and commercial director Dan Trachtenberg released his short film Portal: No Escape in 2011 and thanks to YouTube, we’ve seen quite an influx of good video game short films in recent years. The dedication and effort put in by indie filmmakers have shown us all that a big budget isn’t everything. Dan Trachtenberg is a filmmaker and video podcast host from the Philadelphia suburbs who currently resides in the Los Angeles metro area. He was one of the three hosts of The Totally Rad Show and a former co-host of Geekdrome. Both programs were hosted at Revision3. In addition to working on Internet shows, Trachtenberg is the writer/director of the 2003 short film Kickin?’ and the director of various television commercials and public service announcements. Trachtenberg will direct a film for Bad Robot Productions titled “Valencia.”

The Hunt For Gollum (2009)

Sauron is preparing his armies and Gollum is the only saviour!

The Hunt For Gollum (2009) – The great events of the war of the ring are about to unfold and the priority for Strider and Gandalf is to keep the Ring secret. Sauron is preparing to unleash his armies and Gollum is creeping around Middle Earth with crucial knowledge of the Ring’s location. He must be found.

On a budget of $3,000 and 160 volunteers this is a must-see for any Lord of the Rings fans. Award winning unofficial prequel short film dramatising Aragorn and Gandalf’s long search for Gollum directed by British filmmaker Chris Bouchard. Based faithfully on the appendices of the books this is a non-profit, serious homage to the writing of J.R.R Tolkien and the films of Peter Jackson. It was shot on locations in England and Snowdonia with a team of over a hundred people working over the Internet. For me the best thing was the cinematography. The shots and locations were amazing! There was a lot of variety in scenes which hinted at the different locations Aragorn was traveling through in his search. It took two years to make and was released as a non-profit Internet-only video by agreement with Tolkien Enterprizes. The music and sound effects was another highlight for me. I found it seemed to borrow some elements from Howard Shore’s soundtrack, so that I could still remember being in that world but it was still original. Really awesome job on the effects and 3d sound, especially with the orcs and the fight scenes…

Morbius: The Living Vampire (2014) – the curse of the blood-sucking night-beast!

In attempt to cure himself of a deadly blood disease, Dr. Michael Morbius takes his science too far. Now he must find his place in a world that will not accept him. He is the hero. He is the predator. He is the lost. He is alive. His name is Morbius…the living vampire. Once Michael Morbius was a world-renowned bio-chemist, dying of an unknown blood disease and desperately searching for a cure. He found that cure, but, in turn, it afflicted him with a curse far worse than any possible disease; the curse of the blood-sucking night-beast; the curse of the Living Vampire.

Filmed over the course of a few days in Chicago with ZERO budget, we put this film together over the past few months. The film features some fun homages I think most Morbius/Spiderman fans will pick up on. The soundtrack featured in the film can also be listen to here

The Death and Return of Superman (2011)

The Death and Return of Superman (2011) – Great FIlm about DC Comics Insider’s Chronicle

Literal, insider version what happened in 1992 when DC Comics decided to kill, then resurrect, Superman. Chronicle writer Max Landis made this monologue about “The Death and Return of Superman” storyline from DC Comics over parody-like sketches.

Awesomely funny take on the death and return of superman with Matt Bennett and Liz Gillies, both from the victorious TV show, which made me surprised when I saw them, weird. But it is very good though even if it may offend some DC fans with the negativity of the comic and DC itself. The writing is top notch and there are some really famous cast members in there, I think I saw Simon Pegg. I think it really should have more notice because of the star cast and writing. I think you will like it if you are familiar with the story liner or not because it is a laugh. I found this on YouTube and just thought it was a good video but then the cast surprised me and I found it here with one review so I just decided to be second because I felt like would be a good idea, if you haven’t seen it and are reading this then go to YouTube and search it.

Max Landis was born on August 3, 1985 in Los Angeles County, California, USA. He is a writer and actor, known for Chronicle (2012), The Death and Return of Superman (2011) and Me Him Her (2015).

Directed by Max Landis.
Starring: Max Landis, Kit Willesee, Yuri Lowenthal, Elijah Wood, Ron Howard, Simon Pegg

The Splinter Cell (2014)

The Splinter Cell (2014) – Fanfilm based on a Video-game

The Splinter Cell is a live-action short set in the past that follows the early years of the franchise lead as he becomes the titular hero. Before the game stories, before the modern times, and before Third Echelon: There was only a man. Sam Fisher. Official Splinter Cell movie is apparently coming out next year, but fans did their job earlier.

Atomic Productions 2014. ‘The Splinter Cell’ is a non-profit fanfilm created by the producers out of their love and appreciation for the source material. It is created entirely as a labor of love and not intended for sale or commercial, for-profit distribution. All rights to Splinter Cell franchise belong to Tom Clancy and Ubisoft. Their original work can be seen on YouTube channel (YT/ben3308). They split their time between tense dramas and farcical parodies, so this ‘action’ film was a refreshing test of Atomic Productions crew’s versatility. The weapon that Sam Fisher uses in this short is actually the Mk.23 SOCOM with LAM and silencer, which bears a slight resemblance to the USP. This is the same weapon Sam uses in his default loadout in Splinter Cell: Conviction. Splinter Cell came from Third Echelon being a splinter cell/group within the NSA.

Directed by Ben Adams and Andrew Adams.
Starring: John Redlinger, Todd Gable and Jared Smith

Batman: Dead End (2003)

Batman: Dead End (2003) – Batman vs Joker vs Aliens vs Predator!

The Joker has escaped the Arkham Asylum and Gotham’s hero Batman will try to bring him in – once and for all. As it turns out, Joker is not the only evil enemy Batman has to conquer. Bruce Wayne puts on his Batman suit, mask, and cape, and goes in pursuit. He’s soon found the Joker and begins a fight to subdue the red-eyed, sneering villain. Then, suddenly, things take a surprising turn: the Joker becomes the least of Batman’s worries. New enemies appear: it’s as if he’s found himself in another set of comic books. Can he hold his own?

Batman Dead End has not only set fandom ablaze with it’s ultra stylistic, noirish, accurate depiction of the Dark Knight, it has set a new standard for genre filmmaking and set the bar sky high for all the Hollywood, big budget, superhero and sci-fi films to follow. – torontogosh
