Evangelion: Another Impact – Confidential (2015)

Another time, another place. An activation test of a decisive weapon was underway. With its development and operational trials shrouded in complete secrecy, the Another Number – Unit Null, suddenly breaks free of human control and goes berserk. For what purpose was Another Number – Unit Null created? The story of an Evangelion’s activation, rampage and howling in another world.

The overall quality of the short film is excellent, with some striking poses beautifully composed, and I definitely love the feeling of the EVA unit’s gargantuan weight and momentum conveyed by the animators

Director: Shinji Aramaki

The OceanMaker (2014)

A clever, heroic post-apocalyptic film with spectacular animation and soundtrack!

Plot: After the seas have disappeared, a courageous young female pilot fights against vicious sky pirates for control of the last remaining source of water: the clouds.

The animation of the aircraft are first-class. The dry desert environment was both haunting and realistic. Lots of little touches gave the animation amazing realism, such as the cracked lenses in the binoculars, the weathered planes, and the detritus on the floor bed of the ocean. The orchestral soundtrack suited the piece perfectly and was of equal quality to that heard in any major movie.

Directed by Lucas Martell

Agent 327: Operation Barbershop (2017)

Fun James Bondesque spy comedy with amazing animation

Plot:
Agent 327 is investigating a clue that leads him to a shady barbershop in Amsterdam. Little does he know that he is being tailed by mercenary Boris Kloris.

The animation (Blender) is impressive as it has great detail, and really has the Pixar-blockbuster look but on a much smaller budget. Importantly, the animation is not just a technical piece of work, it also gets the delivery just right; the action and setpieces are played out with good comedic timing, and it makes good use of movement of the ‘camera’ and scenery.

Directed by Hjalti Hjalmarsson and Colin Levy
Starring Thom Hoffman

Piper (2016)

Oscar for Best Animated Short Film Winner!

A young and bright-eyed Sandpiper is motivated by her mother to start hunting for food along with the rest of the flock in the sandy seashore. However, the tiny bird is still terrorised by the surfs that break on the ocean’s shoreline, unable to take care of herself. Poor little Piper, growing up is difficult, nevertheless, your caring mother believes in you.

Irrepressibly adorable film!

Piper is a 2016 computer-animated short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. Written and directed by Alan Barillaro, it was theatrically released alongside Pixar’s Finding Dory on June 17, 2016. At the 89th Academy Awards it won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Like many of Pixar’s shorts it has a lot more depth than can be expected in a short running time, and the unique aspect to this is how the birds and ocean moves so closely as to how in life that it’s only incredible that it wasn’t done via digital-rendering on actual animals.

Directed by Alan Barillaro.
